Victory! OUR STORES ARE SAVED! Giant has agreed to do the right thing and NOT SELL ANY of our Giant stores!
The marches, rallies, petitions, press conferences, and meetings have paid off! We congratulate Giant on its decision and we give thanks to all of our customers, community, and elected leaders for their support over the last four months of uncertainty.
This victory is a true reflection of the years of hard work and dedicated service we have given Giant and demonstrates how valuable we are to their success. Once the FTC approves the merger, which is expected by the end of the month, our jobs will be secure!
The Giant store in Salisbury, Md., where our brothers and sisters who are members of UFCW Local 27 work, will still be sold, but it is being bought by ACME, a division of Albertsons, the parent company of Safeway, and so it will remain a union store.
This huge victory shows the power we have and what we can achieve when we stand strong and together as a union. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this possible. We saved our stores!

On Tuesday, March 15, employees at eight area Giant Food stores were informed that their stores may be sold.
The news came shortly after shareholders approved the merger of Ahold and Delhaize, the European-based parent companies of Giant Food and Food Lion, among others.
We can’t let a corporate merger in Europe take away good jobs and quality shopping options here at home.
